Quantum computers are widely used for solving certain classes of problems (such as factorising large products of prime numbers, an important problem in cryptography). These devices are capable of performing logical operations not possible with classical computers, but their usefulness has been limited by the difficulty of preventing thermal noise from destroying the data contained in the quantum dots.
